Using the barcode scanner function

The Rocktab S500 has a function key ("F1") that can be used to read a 1D or 2D code.

In the default configuration, the barcode scanner acts like a USB keyboard.

To read a 1D or 2D code, proceed as follows:

  1. Tap in the appropriate place (e.g. a text field) where you want the result to be entered.
  2. Press the function key and align the red target LED to the desired barcode.
  3. If the code was read successfully, the read code is entered at the previously defined position. Depending on the configuration, an additional beep sounds.

Reading Techniques

The scan engine has a view finder that projects a bright red aiming beam. The aiming beam should be centered over the bar code, but it can also be positioned outside of the center for a good read.

The aiming beam is smaller when the scan engine is closer to the code and larger when it is farther from the code. Symbologies with smaller bars or elements (mil size) should be read closer to the unit. Symbologies with larger bars or elements (mil size) should be read farther from the unit. To read single or multiple symbols (on a page or on an object), hold the scan engine at an appropriate distance from the target, pull the trigger, and center the aiming beam on the symbol. If the code being scanned is highly reflective (e.g., laminated), it may be necessary to tilt the code up 15° to 18° to prevent unwanted reflection.
