Kiosk mode" is a special operating mode of software that aims to restrict a device to a single function or application. This configuration is often used in public areas to focus users on a specific application and prevents access to other functions or content. Kiosk mode is used in terminals, information stands and self-service facilities to ensure simple and secure use.

In Windows, kiosk mode is implemented via a dedicated user.

User Account Control (UAC) must be activated to enable kiosk mode.

Kiosk mode is not supported via a remote desktop connection. Your kiosk users must log on to the physical device that is set up as a kiosk. Apps running in Kiosk mode cannot use copy and paste.


To set up Kiosk mode in Windows, proceed as follows:

  1. Log in as an administrator to obtain all rights to create a Kiosk account.
  2. Open the settings and navigate to Accounts > Family & other users
  3. Scroll down to *Set up kiosk* and click Get started
  4. Enter a name for the new Kiosk user account and click Next.
  5. Then select the application to be used in this mode, e.g. Microsoft Edge and then click Next. 
  6. Next, select how the Kiosk account should be used and then press Next

As a digital signature or interactive display

Your website will be displayed in full screen mode.


As a public browser

Microsoft Edge has a limited number of features.

 


  1. Enter a URL that will be displayed as the browser's start page. Also select the time after which Microsoft Edge should restart when it is not in use. This is helpful for public kiosks where the start screen should be displayed again after a certain time. Click on Next



  1. Then click on Close


  1. Now check that the kiosk account has been successfully created:
  2. Then check the kiosk mode itself by logging out of the administrator account and opening the kiosk account
  3. To exit kiosk mode again, use the key combination *CTRL + ALT + DEL* and then press Logout
